FAQ

  • Do I need a visa to enter Hong Kong?
Visitors from most countries do not need a visa to enter Hong Kong as a visitor. Please check this website to see if you need a visa to visit Hong Kong: https://www.immd.gov.hk/eng/services/visas/visit-transit/visit-visa-entry-permit.html
  • How do I become a member of ACSS?
Upon receiving your acceptance notification, you received a link to a google form. Sign up on the google doc registration form with the necessary information and pay the membership fee as required.
  • Do I have to pay to become a member? How much?
If you are presenting at the conference in any capacity, you must become a member. Membership will entitle you to attend the ACSS executive meeting to be held during the conference period. Only registered members will be included in the final conference programme. ACSS Membership fee tiers for 2025: Regular members: 550 HKD Full-time students or underemployed scholars: 450 HKD Faculty and Students of The University of Hong Kong: complimentary
  • How does ACSS use the membership fee?
The society will use the membership fee to administer the ACSS 2025 conference and future ACSS proceedings, pay for members’ subscriptions to Asian Cinema, and for honoraria to editorial and administrative assistants. A full breakdown of the budget and expenses will be available at the executive meeting at the ACSS 2025 conference.
  • Do we need to hand in a full paper or just a presentation ppt. for the conference? And when is the deadline for the submission?
Presenters need not submit a final paper for the conference. They only need to give a presentation of roughly 15-20 minutes on the topic proposed in their abstract. However, we do recommend that presenters write out their presentation script beforehand and prepare some visuals for the presentation. Typically, panelists will use powerpoint slides to help convey their arguments and evidence to the audience. Some play clips, but it's up to each presenter to decide how to use their time as long as they stay within the time limit.
  • What facilities and equipment will be available for presentations?
Presenters may make use of HKU centennial campus classroom media functionality (including classroom computer (PC), microphones, projector, speakers, and internet connection). Panels will take place in the following classrooms: CPD 3.01, CPD 3.04, CPD 3.06, CPD 3.07, CPD 3.14, and CPD 3.16. For more information about classroom equipment and fuctionality, see this link: https://its.hku.hk/services/teaching-learning/classroom-support/about-classroom/ There will be limited tech support. Presenters are responsible for preparing any necessary equipment such as connectors, adapters, or memory drives. Please arrive early for your panel in order to prepare.
  • Can we do virtual presentations? Can we record presentations?
No. The entire conference will be face to face. No recording is allowed.
  • I haven't received a notification by now, does this mean that the abstract was rejected?
The committee is sending out notifications in batches. All notifications, regardless of outcome, will be sent by late January. Thank you for your patience.
  • May we request a particular time and date for our presentation?
We will do our best to accommodate scheduling requests but cannot make any guarantees. We will begin organizing the conference schedule after presenters confirm their registrations.
  • I have registered for the conference, but I cannot find the link to pay for ACSS membership. Can I ask where and how I can pay my membership fee?
After registering, you should have received an invoice from PayPal to the registered email address. Please check your spam folder if you did not receive it. The PayPal invoice will give you instructions on how to pay. If necessary, ACSS can email you the PayPal invoice link directly.
  • When will we know the conference programme and schedule?
We will publish the final conference schedule one month before proceedings.
  • May I attend the conference even though I’m not presenting?
All members of the HKU community and faculty and students of Hong Kong universities may attend the conference free of charge. However, they must register beforehand. We will provide registration details closer to the conference dates. Attendance by all others (non-HKU community or faculty/students of Hong Kong universities) will be by invitation only, contingent upon venue capacity. Currently, we are running at full capacity.
